[ARCHIVED] Annual Chlorine Maintenance

NTMWD

During the water system maintenance, tap water remains safe for use and consumption. Residents who are sensitive to changes in the water may notice a stronger taste or smell of chlorine.

This annual system maintenance helps optimize the quality of our drinking water and reduce the amount of hydrant flushing necessary during the warm weather months. Less hydrant flushing during the summer helps conserve water.  “It is critical to maintain the right conditions inside our pipelines,” said Denise Hickey, Water Resource Program and Public Education Manager. "Flushing the system with chlorine in late winter is an important part of maintaining water quality and preparing for the warmer, higher-use summer months ahead,” Hickey added.

NTMWD, and its Member City and Customer water providers, continuously test and monitor water quality within the regional and local systems to ensure the water is safe to drink. If water disinfection levels drop, hydrant flushing may be initiated to remove older water and refill with higher quality water.
