Community Center Town Hall Wrap-Up

Community Center

Last evening’s Town Hall meeting on the construction of the City’s Community Center was well-attended and the interaction with the architect, Ron Hobbs, and City officials resulted in some thoughtful ideas, concerns, and desires for the facility.

Two more opportunities for community members to provide their input include this evening’s Parks & Recreation Board meeting at 7 p.m., and the City Council meeting on Monday, Dec. 4, at 7:30 p.m.  Both of these will be held in the City Council Chambers at City Hall.

Among the points participating residents include the following:

  • hours of operation (traffic, lighting and effects on neighbors);
  • gymnasium (multipurpose or recreation use only);
  • walking track (safe, all weather, type of flooring);
  • meeting rooms (small, large, dividable, use for parties and club meetings, consider acoustics);
  • mixed use spaces;
  • plan for expansion;
  • consider interaction between other buildings on the campus (safe pedestrian crossings);
  • activities for teenagers (teen lounge, watch movies, youth clubs);
  • nursery for parents taking part in exercise classes;
  • split level (build underground);
  • intergenerational mixing;
  • build multipurpose spaces that can be used for multiple activities versus single/special use spaces (flooring and acoustics);
  • wi-fi capabilities;
  • outdoor seating to promote interaction;
  • outdoor lighting;
  • vending machines;
  • security (controlled/card access, cameras, control booth for staff that is visible to all areas);
  • memberships;
  • why this location?;
  • parking concerns;
  • functions that don’t compete with private business (more community activities and less fitness).

Our sincerest thanks to those in attendance, as well as for their input.  We look forward to continued dialogue with residents on this project.
