Library Participates in Library Card Sign-Up Month

September 8, 2017

Sachse library takes part in Library Card Sign-up Month

SACHSE (September 8, 2017) The staff members at the Sachse Public Library have come up with a fun riddle and are challenging residents to solve it by engaging all of their family members.

“It’s not a difficult riddle, and it does not have a hidden meaning, so everyone in the family can help solve it,” says Library Manager Mignon Morse

The riddle asks:  What is something very small, but can transport you around the world?  It can fit in your pocket, but it contains millions of words and pictures.  It can be held in the palm of your hand, but carries the weight of the entire universe.  It’s free, but has value beyond all the riches of the planet.

                Give up?

“It’s the library card,” said Morse.  “That small, light, piece of cardboard is an incredible tool that can open up new horizons beyond one’s wildest imaginations, and it’s free for the asking.”

The Sachse Public Library, located at 3815 Sachse Road in the Sachse Municipal Complex, is participating in Library Card Sign-up Month during September, and is asking residents to ensure that each eligible family member not only have a valid library card, but is encouraged to use it often.

“Libraries across the country, in cooperation with the American Library Association, are participating in card sign-up month by putting on programs to encourage new card holders,” she added.  “Librarians and teachers will tell you that a library card can be one of a student’s most important school supplies.”

Resources at the Sachse Public Library are available to anyone with a library card, and obtaining one is very simple.  They are issued free of charge to anyone with a valid form of identification, such as a school ID.  Applicants for cards under 16 years old are required to have a parent or guardian sign for the card.

Throughout September, the library will host several activities, including story times on Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. and Thursdays at 11 a.m. along with other programs to encourage families to visit the library together.

“One of our favorite, and sometime silliest, events is the ‘Talk Like a Pirate Day Celebration,’ this year held on Tuesday, September 19 at 6 p.m.,” she said.  “A pair of invited pirates will be performing, and coaching participants, in the fine art of talking like a pirate.”

For more information about how to sign up for a library card, visit the Sachse Public Library in person or online at www.cityofsachse.com/library.
